Two security guards posted at a private bank in Korangi were killed, while the branch manager, cashier and another employee sustained injuries by the firing of half a dozen robbers who barged into the bank and took away around Rs1.7 million on Tuesday, police said.
Private Security guards Muhammad Shafiq, 40, and Dilshad Ansari, 27, posted at the United Bank Limited (UBL) K-area branch in Korangi No. 5, were shot multiple times when they tried to resist around six armed men from breaking into the bank in the morning.
“They were around five to six armed men who tried to enter into the UBL’s K-area branch and when the guards resisted them they fired on them with 9mm and .30 pistols, seriously injuring both of them,” SHO Awami Colony police station Hatim Marwat told The News.
According to the police officer, both the seriously injured guards were being shifted to hospital when they succumbed to their injuries.
The armed men later fired inside the bank, slightly injuring cashier Muhammad Ali and another staff member Wajid, besides subjecting branch manager Zafar Iqbal to torture.
The robbers later managed to take away Rs1.6 to 1.7 million from the bank.
However, the actual figure of the amount would be ascertained after the counting and audit.
Police have obtained the footage from the CCTV cameras installed at the bank branch and were trying to identify the robbers with the help of eyewitnesses.
Last year, at least 29 banks were looted across the city and most of the culprits are yet to be arrested. —M. Waqar Bhatti
