Six men were found slaughtered inside a shrine in Gulshan-e-Maymar on Tuesday in an attack claimed by the Pakistani Taliban as a punishment for paying homage to saints.
The victims found from Ayub Shah Bukhari shrine near Khuda Ki Basti were trussed up and their mouths covered with cloth. Police claimed a letter was also found from the crime spot signed by the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) and warning those visiting the shrines will have to face the same fate. The murder weapon was also found from the spot.
According to doctors, the men were slaughtered at least 12 hours before they were brought to hospital, indicating they had been murdered on Monday night.
The heads of four men were severed, said Dr Abdul Haq Memon, the additional police surgeon at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. The men were all between 20 and 50 years old. There were no torture marks on their bodies.
Unconfirmed reports suggested the men were under the influence of drugs when they were slaughtered as they offered no or little resistance. The victims were identified as Munawwar, Saleem, Javed, Abid, Ramzan and a man who was known as Jinn Baba.
The shrine is around a decade old and was built on the grave of a man who lived at the place earlier and was buried there.
SSP Central Amir Farooqi, who currently holds the DIG West portfolio also, told the media that three of the victims, including Jinn Baba, lived at the shrine and while the three others were visitors, who lived in the nearby villages. “We have found the dagger which was used to slit the throats of the men. We are currently investigating the case and trying to ascertain the motive behind the killings,” he told The News on phone later.
The shrine’s caretaker, Juman Shah Solangi, discovered the bodies and informed the police. The caretaker was not treated as a suspect because he was not present at the shrine when the men were slaughtered.
Machhi turned Syed
Manghopir SDPO Shaukat Hussain said the shrine’s caretaker was a Machhi by cast but had declared himself as a “Syed”.
“Solangi and Jinn Baba had become spiritual figures in the area,” he said. “Solangi told us that Baba used to practise exorcism and women also used to visit the shrine. These people were taking undue advantage of the people’s illiteracy and ignorance.”
Hussain claimed all the victims were hashish addicts as it was a common occurrence at shrines. Police also found charas and pipes used to smoke hashish from the crime scene. “We are questioning a large number of people in the adjoining areas, including Khuda ki Basti and Gabol Goth, to narrow down our search for the suspects.”
Taliban responsible
A police official told The News on the condition of anonymity that the police had found a letter signed by the TTP near the bodies at the shrine stating: “Those visiting the shrines will meet the same fate.”
“Apparently the TTP is the main suspect in this case as they have a history of attacking shrines and people visiting shrines in Pakistan and the world over,” he said. Taliban have a known presence in the area where the gruesome murders took place.
The Taliban denounce worship at shrines as blasphemy and have carried out many deadly bomb and suicide attacks in recent years at the places considered holy by a large faction of orthodox Sunnis.
In one of the bloodiest bombings, at least 50 people were killed in April 2011 in a suicide attack on a 13th century shrine in Dera Ghazi Khan.
